    Bass Player Get-Together

A long time ago at a gig far far away, Ken had mentioned a bass clinic her in town. I was talking to him about it and I had a little idea: What about some kind of get togther for all of us 'local' bass pickers? There are a lot of different styles and different kinds of equipment here in town, so what if we all get together to pick up pointers and ideas from each other and try out each other's gear. Now, obviously there is going to have to be some trust here 'Honor Among Thieves' if we're gonna let other people touch our rigs.

We'd need some place big enough for everyone and it'd probably be a good idea for everyone to pitch in a few bucks for pizza or something. It'd probably also be a good idea to keep the drinking to a minimum, because I know how a some of you get after you've had a few. This is gonna be a fun time, but it is also meant to be educational.

OK guys, it's your turn. Any thoughts or suggestions?

    Re: Bass Player Get-Together

This is a great idea. i just last week bought a 6 string Ibanez bass and am trying to learn to play it. As a new bass player I would not have a whole lot to contribute but I would be glad to come out and sponge free knowledge from some of you guys. I do know a little about music theory and such so if anyone that showed up wanted to learn some of that I would be glad to help.

I am learning bass so as to expand my employability here in town. I am an OK guitarist but there are hundreds of OK guitarists around. I see a lot of bass players around that really don't do a lot with the instrument and I am hoping within a few months to fill a void in some bands low end department.

An "OK" guitarist? You?! You shred, dude! I can only imagine how good you'll be on a bass :) I'm searching for a possible time to hold this as places to hold this aren't hard to find. I'm sure we'll come up with something soon. The problem is actually getting people to show up, which is why this idea never went beyond the 'idea' point hehe.

    Re: Bass Player Get-Together

Of course I'll be there, but it'd be nice if we could get some solid yes or no responses from around town. I'll probably bring a friend or two who are musicians, but want to step up to the joy of less strings.

OK peeps! Time to put up or shut up. This is for the benefit of the gurus like Ken as well as the guy who just bought his first bobo bass from a pawn shop.

This sounds pretty cool. If we can get enough folks to commit, we could likely get a music store to host as they might make a few bucks off of us. Nice music in Orange Park has some room and might welcome a crowd. We do need some peeps though. Chime in all you bottom feeders out there!!

    Re: Bass Player Get-Together

That's the spirit! I'm glad to see people throwing in good ideas. It shouldn't be much longer at this rate. I know Bob Nice and I am sure that he would go for it, if we were to give him plenty of forewarning. Heck, he might even wanna do some advertising. This would bring in business for him and get some guys to want to 'upgrade' their equipment. He has a nice selection of bass stuff.

    Re: Bass Player Get-Together

LOL! Thanks, Hal, but I'm not a "guru" of the bass. I do appreciate the vote of confidence, though. Granted, I've been playing more than my fair share of years, but I'd consider guys like John Broussard, Eddie Selph or Barry Dunaway "gurus" of the bass. Those guys are highly knowledgeable shredders! I'm still interested in providing any knowledge I can to anyone willing to use it to their advantage, though, so a "Bass Player Get Together" forum would be nice. One of my favorite quotes from Gene Simmons was, "Take what someone else has done and make it your own." and it seems to work for me.

    Re: Bass Player Get-Together

Well, I'm a newbie. I only just started playing recently, in 1979. The guy that taught me to play, Banner Thomas, only had a few albums under his belt, so Ken, if you can spare a few minutes, could you teach me some stuff? LOL LOL LOL

Actually, it has been my experience that no matter how good you are or how much you know about anything, there is ALWAYS more that you can learn. I always welcome the opportunity to learn more stuff. I'm not really great at playing bass, but I am  master of faking it. I make simple scales seem like I am REALLY doing something amazing. Just ask Ken, he's seen me play. LOL

Did you guys ever decide on a time/place? I'm back on bass after a 5yr break, I could use the mentoring. Thanks from the laziest b player alive.
